T-minus one month…

A little over one month and counting until I depart for two years in Peru with the Peace Corps. I’ll be working as a small business volunteer which can mean anything from small business education to organizational development. I’ve been working my tail off at DC Energy (current job) trying to get all the loose ends tied up before I go and have had just enough time to send off my passport documentation and try to piece together an ‘aspiration statement’ to send off to the Peace Corps office in Peru. As such, and despite my fear of all things ‘Internet’, I decided to give blogging a try, having only returned a handful of e-mails and phone calls I received over the last few weeks. I figure this can kill a few birds with one stone and will save those of you who don’t want to get the mass e-mails but were too polite to say so. However, I vow to remain a dedicated old fashioned pen-pal to those who will still have me.

Allow me one paragraph of cheesiness to say that all the support and enthusiasm my friends and family have shown has allowed me to truly weigh this decision and thus go forward with confidence and certainty that I am moving in the right direction. With the thousands of volunteers stationed around the world, it is easy to trivialize one particular experience but every time someone decides to make this commitment the decision is a journey in and of itself and between the doubt, the raised eyebrows, the anemia and the ambloypia, I feel so blessed to have such a strong foundation of support from the people around me. I know I don’t say thank you enough, but if I’ve learned one thing in my first day of blogging, it is that the Internet is there so you can do and say the things that you are too chicken to do in person. Plus, my parents and internet-savvy grandparents are probably the only people who will actually read this, and they deserve the most thanks.

I promise from here on out to (attempt to) post only witty and insightful stories, thoughts, and ideas. Which means, to continue blogging, I’ll most likely break that promise. I can assure you, though, that there will be several posts about the stray dogs and several more about the bed bugs which should prove to be entertaining reads.
